Warm & Welcoming
About Tudor House Holistic Centre
Our Vision: When we moved into the building in the summer or 2019 it had been empty for 3 years. It was cold, damp and musty, but clearly had the potential to be a lovely cosy place, with many original features still in place and a lovely welcoming feel. Our vision was to create a place where many healing and community activities could take place, enabling this beautiful place to be shared with the people of Stafford and elsewhere.
Fees are paid on a casual basis, which is particularly helpful for people starting their own businesses who maybe are reluctant to take on extended rental commitments. Now it has been transformed and redecorated, and all the rooms are available for a variety of uses ranging from classes and workshops to individual treatments and counselling. Each room has been given a personal touch, for example with house plants, handmade signage for the rooms and outside and appropriate ornaments and books.
Tudor House is located in a historical Colonnade off Eastgate Street with roots dating back to the 16th century. The entrance hall has a 19th century staircase and an attractive alcove on the wall (part of the original fireplace) together with a selection of prints and ornaments with a medieval feel and a hand embroidered wall hanging at the top of the stairs. It is located in the heart of the town of Stafford, being a 2-minute walk from the town centre and close to all the town centre shops.
The rooms themselves are named after previous residents of the property – for example, Mary’s Bower is named after Mary Barker, the lady who first decided to rent out the property in the early 1700s! Everyone who has used the building has loved it straight away, and we are looking forward to sharing this building with more people who can use this building for healing, counselling, education, spiritual training, or even just as a place to work quietly for a few hours!

Warm & Welcoming
History Of Tudor House
Now an attractive building with a combination of many architectural styles, this is familiar to many people in Stafford as a collection of shop premises restored in the 1980s. What may be less well-known is that it actually has a history dating back to the 16th century. Although there are no written records on it before 1690, at that time it was recorded that a large timber-framed house on the site was owned by either a William Barker or his son of the same name. The former was a leading townsman who had moved into the town after the English Civil War. He was a successful business man, having premises on the east side of the Market Square, trading in cloth. However, his fortunes declined and he resigned as an alderman ‘due to the decay of my estate and my confinement in prison so that I am unable to attend council meetings’. Later his fortunes were restored, as when he died in 1705 he was described as a gentleman.
The house on Eastgate Street was let as a private house, and divided into two dwellings (nos 8 & 9) in the early 1700s. Since then these buildings have had a variety of uses, mostly as business premises. For example, number 9 was used by a thread-maker, Thomas Clarke, in the 1790s (his son, Edward, has a room named after him) and a leather merchant (John Plant) in the 1830s, and as an office for The Imperial Typewriter Company in the early 1920s.
In 1810 the premises were taken by James Nixon, and a hat maker, who subsequently let some of the upstairs rooms as gentlemen’s apartments with stables. In those days, there were many more public houses in Eastgate Street and the rest of the town generally than there are today, and one can imagine that maybe these gentlemen sometimes came back to their rooms having had a few drinks too many!
The alterations were done in 1984, converting the existing building and passageway into a Colonnade of small shops; and then no. 9 became a newsagents till 2002. This building has also housed a knitting company, a dance studio, Stafford Labour Club, a casting agency and an employment agency, amongst other businesses.
